Meeting: Preparing the children for separation from the biological family

On 04 March 2010 in Osijek SOS Children's Villages Croatia and SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci held a round table on the subject Preparing the children for separation from the biological family.

Representatives from the Social centres and the courts, as well as the advisor for the children's public defender from Osijek took part in the meeting.

The national director, Ms VišnjaTuškan-Krupić, and the village director Mr Zoran Relić, made the introductory addresses to the crowded room. Following them, two young girls from the SOS Children's Villages took the floor talking about their experiences of living in the village. Both university students, they are fine examples of successful adaptation to the conditions in an SOS Children's Village. Two SOS mothers gave their insights on the work and life with children in care. One biological mother who has a child in care in an SOS Children's Village described her positive experiences from the good cooperation of the village with the parents which is in the best interest of the child.

The psychologist of the SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci, Ms Višnja Matić, held a lecture on the preparations for separation of the children from their biological families stressing the importance of the decision-making process and the quality standards for children applicable to that phase. In another lecture by psychiatrist Mr Jugoslav Gojković the emphasis was on the processes which take place with the children during the separation, accommodation and adaptation. Mr Gojković spoke of the professional competencies of every person involved in these procedures and the strategies for their empowerment.

The round table was evaluated as very useful by and for all legal and social protection workers who deal with separations [of children from their biological families]. It provided important information to the experts of the area and shed light on the processes which take place during this extremely stressful situation.
