Corn festival 2010

On Thursday in SOS Children's Village Lekenik we have organized Corn festival, with this ceremony each year in the SOS Children's Villages we mark the beginning of the new school year and the transition of former elementary in high school.

The transition from the SOS Children's Village in the SOS Youth Facilities marks the transition of young people in the second phase of the family model of long-term care for children and young people, the transition from a circle of SOS family and SOS mothers in the facilities where for the youth take care educators who are experts in the field of social sciences and humanities.

SOS mother is the key member of the family that she builds with the children entrusted to her care, using all of her qualities and skills to create a welcoming, loving environment. In the second phase of the family model, SOS mothers replaced educators that young can rely on.

With this Corn festival we are moving Ana in SOS YF Velika Gorica, Katarina, Mataja, Irena, Luka and Frane in YF Velika Gorica 1 and Kristijan and Nena in YF Zagreb.

"I'm happy and excited about moving to the SOS Youth Facility of Velika Gorica and looking forward to new friends and high school. It is not easy for me, to part with the SOS mother, but I am sure that I always visit her, "said Irena, one of the future high school students from the SOS Children's Village Lekenik.

All of our youngsters go to school, training for a wide range of professions. We have future hairdressers, sales clerks, nurses, pedicurists, gas fitters, electrical technicians, accountants. The most accomplished students have the opportunity to go on to higher education, so some of our youngsters now study civil engineering, computer sciences, economy, nursing, and in one case, chemistry. We also try to help the youngsters by organizing various courses, as our finances allow, to help them acquire new skills that might be helpful in their future professions. Many of our youngsters have completed foreign language courses, computer courses or driving school. Some of our youngsters study abroad, in institutions such as the United World College in Costa Rica.
