Meeting with the Disability Ombudsman

At the initiative of Association SOS Children's Village Croatia, a meeting took place in the Office of the Croatian Disability Ombudsman to discuss the release of the Croatian translation of the Council of Europe brochure “Children and Young People in Care”.

Representatives of the SOS Children's Village Croatia presented their work and the work of their association, and requested the opinion of ombudsman and her associates on the brochure, while also outlining a number of proposals for further collaboration. The brochure contains information on the protection of rights of children and youth in various types of care, including alternative care. In addition to text, there are illustrations featuring concrete examples of problems that arise during the care provision process. The brochure also sets forth guidelines that can help children and youth in making decisions related to the improvement of communication with care providers and other social welfare professionals. Knowing one’s rights and understanding their importance helps children and youth to speak up and take an active role in their own life and the process of gaining independence while still in care.

In our desire to release the best possible version of this manual, written in child- and youth-friendly language, we invited the Office of the Disability Ombudsman to collaborate with us by giving us their opinion on the translation of the brochure and by outlining recommendations and amendments to the brochure that could further raise its relevance. The Office proposed the use of terminology harmonized with the international documents, the Croatian Constitution and other national documents and suggested amendments to the brochure in the form of adding information on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Office of the Disability Ombudsman contact information. The Ombudsman recommended that we contact the Croatian Association of the Blind, Association for the Promotion of Quality Education for Persons with Disabilities “Zamisli” and the Vinko Bek Educational Center, for their input on how to publish a brochure for the blind, since printing it in Braille may not be the only option for making the brochure accessible to the blind and the visually impaired. The Ombudsman will participate in the drafting of the Introduction to the brochure.
