SOS Children's Village Croatia at the assembly of the Croatian Youth Network

Young person from SOS Children's Village Croatia, Irena Šakarec, reports on her participation at the assembly. SOS Children's Village Croatia becomes candidate member of the Croatian Youth Network.

Croatian Youth Network (CYN) is an alliance of 59 non-governmental youth organizations acting as the National Youth Council in the Republic of Croatia. CYN is also a member of the European Youth Forum. CYN is a non-governmental, non-profit and non-partisan civil society association that advocates and promotes interests and well-being of young people based on principles of tolerance, understanding and respecting their rights and needs.

On December 16, 2010, Andreja Rosandić, SOS Children's Village Croatia children’s rights advocate, and I drove to Rijeka from Velika Gorica. We got there in two hours and immediately went to our first meeting, on mediation. At this workshop, i.e. mini-conference, we discussed the role of student councils on implementation of peer-to-peer mediation. There were, of course, many other participants: teachers, pedagogues, directors of medical facilities and centers, trainers and youth representatives of institutions and youth organizations. We had a long and interesting day, and when it was over we retired to the Rijeka Hostel, where the Youth Network organizers arranged accommodations for us.

On the morning of December 17 we found ourselves at the elementary school “Pećine”, where the actual assembly took place. Nikola Pandurić, the Croatian Youth Network president, and Vojko Obersnel, the mayor of Rijeka, opened the proceedings. Following the welcoming address, the assembly adopted the rules of procedure and the agenda, and confirmed the presence of quorum. After electing the assembly chair, the recording clerk, the election committee, the verification committee and the witness of the minutes, the assembly adopted the progress report, financial report and the report of the overseeing committee regarding the work of the CYN. Andreja and I gave a presentation on SOS Children's Village Croatia as a part of our bid to become a CYN candidate member. Our nomination was accepted, naturally.

There were several workshops on informal education scheduled for Saturday, December 18, but they were canceled due to heavy snowfall, which also forced Andreja and me to return home quickly. All in all, we had a great time, we learned new things and had fun along the way. We are hoping to have an even better time next year.
