ZKM gives a free performance

“Ugly Duckling”, adapted by Ivor Martinić from the Hans Christian Andersen’s tale and directed by Robert Waltl, for the children from SOS Children's Village Lekenik.

The tale of the rejected duckling, whose siblings, neighbors, the entire duck community and his own mother avoid him because his looks do not fit the norm, turns into a far-reaching search for identity. When the duckling leaves home and strikes out on his own, he suffers mockery from geese, attacks from hunters, dogs, cats and chicken and failed attempts at adoption by the villagers, before finally encountering a herd of gorgeous swans and discovering that he is one of them. Psychologists claim that obstacles that Ugly Duckling encounters on his way serve to strengthen children’s character and make exposure to the cruelties of the real world more bearable.
Six children and the adults who accompanied them saw the play in ZKM yesterday.

Thank you, ZKM, for the gift of this beautiful tale to the SOS Children's Village children.
