Young Marko donates a bicycle to SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci

SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci received a visit from Marko Husar and Krešimir Bubalo, the Mayor of Osijek. This unusual story began at the 40th Kite Festival “Kites Above The City”, when the winner, Marko Husar, donated his award to the children from the SOS Children's Village.

On Friday, June 10, SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci received a visit from Marko Husar, the winner of the 40th Kite Festival “Kites Above The City”, and the Mayor of Osijek, Krešimir Bubalo. It all began last weekend during the Kite Festival, held at a small airport Osijek-Čepin, when a winner of the highest altitude category, third-grader Marko Husar from the elementary school “Višnjevac”, decided to generously donate a bicycle he received as an award to the children from SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci. Marko’s gesture vowed everyone in attendance. During the award ceremony, mayor Krešimir Bubalo promised that City of Osijek would match Marko’s donation to SOS Children's Village.

When the news reached our SOS Village, Marko quickly gained the status of a hero. Children were particularly pleased and touched by the fact that a child their own age has chosen to extend such a generous gesture. In return, when deciding on who will receive the bicycle, we focused on children whose sense of responsibility, conscientiousness and overall excellence in school really stood out. We all agreed that the bicycle should go to Novela, a cheerful, smart and humble girl who attends the 2nd grade of elementary school. The other bicycle, promised by the City of Osijek, would go to Manuela.

Marko and his parents came to SOS Children's Village on a lovely Friday morning, bringing the bicycle for Novela in a huge box. Marko said that he always wanted to visit an SOS Village, so Novela, who is close to him in age, took him on a tour and told him everything about living in the SOS Children's Village. Novela also invited Marko into her own home, the SOS house Apricot, and introduced him to all her SOS brothers and sisters.

Novela and Marko agreed to stay in touch, so we are hoping that Marko will visit us again soon. When children later learned that mayor Krešimir Bubalo arrived to the SOS Children's Village not with 1, but with 5 bicycles, they were beside themselves with joy. In other words, in addition to Novela and Manuela, 4 more children became proud owners of brand new bicycles.
Once again, we would like to thank Marko Husar, the City of Osijek and mayor Krešimir Bubalo on their generosity!
