Corn Festival and Autumn Outing

SOS Children's Village Lekenik held its traditional Corn Festival, a celebration to mark the beginning of the new school year in SOS Children's Village Lekenik and the transfer of former eighth graders to high schools and SOS Youth Facilities. This year’s Corn Festival featured fun, games and sporting events, but also educational workshops designed to foster independence in the Village youth.

The Corn Festival took place in SOS Children's Village Lekenik, but this year children from SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci also joined the celebration. They marked the transfer of children to SOS Youth Facilities by taking an Autumnal Outing to the nearby Emaus resort. SOS Children's Villages Lekenik and Ladimirevci said goodbye and gave special prizes to young people going to the Youth Facilities in the event filled with laughter, games and sports and everyone feasting on roasted and cooked corn on the cob and hot dogs.
Transfer from SOS Children's Village to SOS Youth Facility marks the transition of young people to the second phase of the family-based model of long-term child and youth care, i.e., moving from the SOS family and SOS mother to the Youth Facility, where young people live under the care of educators trained in various fields of social sciences and humanities. SOS mothers play a pivotal role in the development of children from the Village. They give themselves selflessly to the children who live with them. SOS mother is the foundation of the SOS family, which she builds with children entrusted to her care, using all of her personal traits and professional skills to create a sense of belonging and love and to ensure safety and home for her children. In the second phase of the family-based model, educators take the place of an SOS mother as the equally strong source of support for the young people. The contact with the SOS mother, however, is never broken.

This Friday in SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci, the spotlight was on a particular SOS mother, Đurđica Bizomec. Đurđica Bizomec is the first SOS mother from Ladimirevci to take retirement. She retired the day before the Corn Festival, so the Village children and other Village members prepared a number of surprises for her to thank her for her work, care and love. Dr. Oetker donated a sweet surprise, pastries and a cake to mark the celebration. Many thanks to our donor, Dr. Oetker.

“Just as our children move to a new community, we mothers must eventually take another path, leading us to other communities. However, I will always remember the days I spent in the SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci as the beautiful time filled with laugher, play and just an occasional teardrop. My years in the Village have been very fulfilling and eventful, and I am sincerely proud to have been a part of this wonderful community. I will always be happy to come back for a visit and keep an eye on the further developments here”, said Đurđica Bizomec in Ladimirevci, commenting on her status as the first SOS mother to retire.

In the SOS Youth Communities, we encourage independence of each young person to make sure they are prepared to live on their own after leaving SOS. All youngsters in the YF go to school. They are in training for a wide range of professions, from hairdressing, sales and nursing to gas fitting, electrical engineering and office administration. Those who have the interest and good grades have the opportunity to enroll in the institutions of higher learning. Most of our youngsters go on to college after graduating from high school. Young people from SOS Children's Village study civil engineering, economy and nursing, and some have gone to study abroad; for example, we have a student at the UWC College in Costa Rica.
