President visits SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci

President of the Republic of Croatia Mr. Ivo Josipović visited SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci on February 12, 2012.

The visit began with a brief meeting with Zoran Relić, the director of SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci, Mariza Katavić, the Association president, and Višnja Tuškan-Krupić, the national director, who told President Josipović more about the SOS concept and life in the SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci. After this brief introduction, the president and numerous guests watched the entertainment program put together by our children.

After the introduction, the president and numerous guests watched the entertainment program put together by our children. Preschoolers Lana, Viktorija, Valentina, Petra, Ema, Toni, Mijo and the beaming soloist Dalibor opened the festivities singing “Fall, Fall, Little Flakes”, in hopes of summoning snow to our part of the country. To honor the occasion, Nikolina, Tomislav and Novela held a recital featuring poems about mothers and homeland. But what really won the president and the rest of the audience over were Ivan, Lea, Martina and Dragana, who recited their own poems.

After the entertainment portion of the program, director Zoran Relić invited President Josipović to attend Children’s Parliament as an honorary guest, providing the children with the opportunity to indulge in a Q&A session with the president. Of course, the president also took the opportunity to ask the children about their life in the SOS Children's Village. It is not every day that children get the chance to talk directly to the President of Croatia, so they were eagerly raising their hands, asking one question after another. They were interested in finding out more about presidential responsibilities, how it felt to be the president of the entire country, what changed in his life since his inauguration, but they also wanted to know about his favorite subjects in school and sports he played in his youth. For his part, the president wanted to know what school subjects they found especially difficult and who was the best football player among them. The president said that he really enjoyed his time with the children in the SOS Children's Village and urged them to continue to do well in school, to pursue sports and to keep on being friendly and respectful to each other.

We gave President Josipović a painting made by our children, while the president, acting on behalf of the Croatian Humane Stars, presented SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci with 14 LCD TV sets, one for each SOS house. Before ending his visit, President Ivo Josipović spent some time in the Cherry SOS house with the SOS mothers. In his conversation with the SOS mothers he showed particular interest in their relationship with the biological parents of children, in how they spend their free time and how they approach care for children with behavioral disturbances.

Before leaving, President Josipović said goodbye to the children and staff of the SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci, and posed for a picture with all of his hosts and their guests.

Vladimir Šišljagić, the prefect of the Osijek-Baranja County, and Valpovo mayor Leon Žulj also brought gifts to the children in the SOS Children's Village. Each of them arrived with two laptop computers, which means that we can now plan the details our computer workshop in earnest.
We owe a special debt of gratitude to the director of Croatian Humane Stars, Branko Tušek, who initiated President Josipović’s visit and coordinated the donors who brought gifts for the children.

Continuing the Croatian Humane Stars charity campaign “Sports for a Healthy Lifestyle”, 12 children from Children's Village played a friendly football match with children who attend the Krpan-Babić Football Academy in Osijek. Although they lost the match, we commend our little players for their enthusiasm and sense of fair play. We also thank the organizer and host for their hospitality and presents that delighted all the children who live in SOS families in the SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci.
