Eco-recreation and gardening sensation

As soon as the weather allows it, SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci and Dandelion Kindergarten in Bizovec will launch a one-of-a-kind project in Croatia. The project, called Eco-Recreation and Gardening Sensation, will run the entire year.

Director of SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci, Zoran Relić, pointed out that this project is the outcome of the initiative that SOS Children's Village Croatia launched with the School of Agronomy in Osijek. “The goal of the project is to offer creative workshops in SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci and Dandelion Kindergarten in Bizovec, to encourage the children, who spend a good part of each day indoors, to be outdoors as much as possible, while teaching them the basics of healthy food production, environmental protection and proper biological waste disposal. At the same time, we want to raise the awareness of the entire community to the fact that what starts as a recreational activity can lead to a family having a permanent source of fresh and healthy produce in their own backyard.”

Dr. Snježana Tolić from the Osijek School of Agronomy played a major role in conceiving this project. She wanted to introduce children to her innovative concept of organizing organic food production within a network of small enterprises. The value of the project was recognized by the Adris Foundation, which will ensure financial support in the amount of HRK 35.000.

“We plan to equip 3 houses in SOS Children's Village and the kindergarten in Bizovec with organic gardens and composters for children, to teach them how to sort waste. We will also offer 6 supporting workshops, and the whole project will be inaugurated with compost pouring and planting of different fruits, vegetables and other plants. Not only will the children be responsible for the cultivation of the plants in keeping with the instructions they will receive from Ranko Gantner and volunteer students from the School of Agronomy, they will also have the opportunity to record details of plant production and be able to taste the fruit of their labor themselves, so the benefits will be many. This project will also serve a basis for the launch of new projects aimed towards creating an eco-zone”, said Dr. Tolić.

More than 40 kindergarten children will take part in the project. Fifteen children from SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci will be directly involved, and the same number of children will participate indirectly.
