“77 Hours for 77 Hearts”

The KEKS collective, a group of fitness enthusiasts who promote cycling, sports and healthy living, rode in a charity ultra-marathon, crossing the 1200 km from Ilok to Dubrovnik in 77 hours. The raised funds went towards buying the much needed household appliances for SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci, a home to 77 children, before they even left Ilok.

- We have been training together in Virovitica almost every day for the past several years, but we are not interested in trophies – we do it because we love cycling. Last year we held our first charity ultra-marathon, crossing the distance from Osijek to Knin in 34 hours, and we would love it if this charity ride became traditional – said Danijel Breza Brešćanski from KEKS upon arriving in Dubrovnik. He added that the last 50 km were, unsurprisingly, the toughest, what with the fatigue, lack of sleep, and rough terrain.
Even in the planning stages of the ultra-marathon to Dubrovnik, they knew how demanding the ride under the symbolic name of “77 Hours for 77 Hearts” would be, but as he explained, children from SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci were worth it.

- Maybe choosing this route was a little ambitious, but we like to challenge ourselves and push our boundaries. I doubt I would have the courage to ride without stopping for longer than this; we only slept a few hours since departing from Ilok. We’ll take some time to recover and than plan the next ride – said Brešćanski, admitting that there were some tough moments during the ride, when they needed every bit of encouragement from each other. Picturing the smiles of the children from Ladimirevci, whom they met while planning the ride, was an added motivation. Meeting the children again while they were handing over the valuable donation made them even more determined to honor this new friendship.
