Youth Day in the SOS Children's Village Croatia

Youth Day is designed to allow our youngsters to evaluate the quality of care in the SOS Children's Village Croatia and to encourage them to take active part in making the decisions that affect them.

The three-day gathering was attended by the youth representatives from all our Youth Facilities, YF directors and several educators. Orahovica Red Cross once again acted as our generous host. In the relaxed, but focused atmosphere, our youngsters worked in small groups and were eager to share their experiences and discuss them with everyone present. We were impressed by their presentations and the wisdom and honesty of our young speakers. The evaluations and thoughts of our young persons regarding the quality of life in the SOS Children's Village Croatia represent valuable information which will be used to plan and design youth-oriented activities in the future. Everyone had the opportunity to learn something new, grown-ups from the youngsters and vice versa, and everyone had a great time. Joint work and socializing in the off-hours helped our young people to get to know each other better, to learn new things and to strengthen themselves for the new challenges awaiting them while they prepare for independent life.

Here is what our youngsters had to say about the Youth Day:

“This is a worthy project and I am happy I could be a part of it. I felt as a part of the large community that makes its decisions together. On an individual level, it gave me a sense that I matter, that I belong. It was also wonderful to meet so many young and promising people and see how mature they are in their outlook, which only serves as further proof that SOS CVC is successful”, said Daliborka.

“What can I say except that it was interesting and that we had a great time. We had workshops where we could express our opinions about the SOS system and its work. The most interesting thing about it was freedom to talk about positive and negative features, and educators respected our views. We also had free time, during which we could socialize and go swimming in the pool. I would like to praise our educators, who were very understanding and treated us respectfully, just as we treated them. I also hope we will see each other next year, and I strongly recommend to everyone who hasn’t been yet to register so that they can experience this. Working in groups was efficient and interesting, but we could also take breaks from work to have fun”, said Lea.

Gabrijela, Mihaela, Martina and Anamarija also have only good things to say about this get-together in Orahovica.
“We expressed a wide range of different opinions, as did the educators. We learned new words, such as ‘discrimination’ – this means singling out people, for example, ‘You’re Roma, and I am not, so I refuse to accept you as one of us.’ I had a lovely time, and my favorite part was working in groups, because we crystallized our differing opinions and views on various topics through conversation. I also enjoyed meeting kids from other facilities, and I hope to see them again next year.”
