Humane Stars celebrate the 20th anniversary of SOS Children's Village Lekenik

On Tuesday, October 8, a charity football game between Humane Stars of Croatia and Friends of SOS Children's Village Lekenik took place.

The first kick-off at the game was performed by a four-year-old Đ.Đ. from SOS Children's Village Lekenik, with the help of Mr. Branko Tušek, the special envoy of the Croatian president. The proceeds of this charity game – a total of 746 sold tickets costing HRK 10 each – was donated to SOS Children's Village Lekenik. Several hundred children watched in delight as the Friends of SOS Children's Village Lekenik team played. On the team were the former captain of the Croatian national team, Zvonimir Boban, Croatian actor, social activist and president of Croatian Association of Dramatic Artists Goran Grgić, actor Mile Biljanović (The Brave Adventures of the Little Shoemaker), professor Dubravko Klarić, captains of all football teams from the Lekenik region and numerous other friends of SOS Children's Village Lekenik.

Humane Stars of Croatia are celebrating the 10th anniversary of their work. “This is our 57th game. All of our campaigns so far have been aimed at raising funds for the children. As always, we had many members interested in playing. This time, our team included Silvio Marić, Tomislav Rukavina, Branko Strupar, Kruno Jurčić, Damir Škaro, Branko Tušek, actor Slaven Knezović, president of the Croatian Olympic Committee Zlatko Mateša, and many others”, said Mr. Dejan Pap, secretary of the NGO Humane Stars of Croatia.

In addition to the famous football players and other athletes, we also had two well-known MCs: TV and radio host Frano Ridjan and Lidl spokesman Mario Petreković.
“This year, SOS Children's Village Lekenik celebrates its 20th anniversary. Depending on the perspective, it can be seen as a long stretch of time or merely blink of an eye in the life of an SOS Children's Village. During this period, more than 300 children have found homes in our Village. We are proud of our accomplishments, but SOS Children's Village just wouldn’t be complete without its friends. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone from the NGO Humane Stars of Croatia who so readily responded to our invitation to play a charity game together”, said Mario Čović, director of SOS Children's Village Lekenik.

Davor is a blond boy from SOS Children's Village Lekenik, cheerful, crazy about football and as playful as a country sparrow. He is a fifth-grader. Davor regularly gets accolades for his theatrical roles, but he dreams of running across the green football field as a right wing-back, demolishing the opponents’ defense, performing a right-foot volley and striking a goal! And then everyone jumps to their feet and calls his name: “Davooooor, you’re the champion!!!” Davor would love to play for a major team one day, so it’s not surprising that October 8, when former members of the Croatian national team came to SOS Children's Village Lekenik, will be the day he remembers for the rest of his life.

The game ended in a tie, 3:3. Goals for the Humane Stars were scored by Branko Strupar, Stjepan Jukić and Amir Kazić Leo, while scorers in the Friends of SOS Children's Village team were Željko Kovačević, Mario Majstorović and Mario Bušić. After the referee Vlado Svilokosa whistled to end the game, all players and other friends of the Village gathered together to celebrate.
Gracing the event with their presence were Her Excellency Ms. Andrea Ikić-Boehm, Austrian ambassador to Croatia, Lidl CEO Mr. Boris Lukšić, deputy prefect of Sisak-Moslavina County Mr. Zdenko Vahovec, president of the Lekenik Municipality Mr. Ivica Perović and many others.
