Auntie Zdenka – The Pride of SOS Children's Village Croatia – The Pride of Croatia

At the Pride of Croatia award ceremony, held last Sunday evening in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, one of the recipients of this award for courage, honesty and kindness was Mrs. Zdenka, who is also our pride!

In July and August 2013, eight SOS families spent an unforgettable vacation at the island of Čiovo, in the house belonging to Mrs. Zdenka Džajić Radtke. Today all of us in the Children's Village Ladimirevci simply call her auntie Zdenka. People in her community have recognized her humanity, kindness and lifelong dedication to children and nominated her for the award called Pride of Croatia.

Auntie Zdenka, already the pride of our Children's Village, on Sunday became the Pride of Croatia. She accepted this important award in the Zagreb Museum of Contemporary Art.

“They brought so much positivity and joy into my house, and that is sometimes that we as adults often forget, because we let ourselves be overwhelmed with our everyday problems” said Zdenka.
During the two months she spent with fifty-three children, eight SOS mothers and one SOS auntie, auntie Zdenka has done a lot to capture our hearts. She let us use her house, but she was also personally involved in activities undertaken during the time she had our children staying over.

“I discovered that SOS mothers are amazing women. In addition to cooking for children, taking them to school and kindergarten and studying with them, they are pillars of strength for children while they struggle with their biggest challenges”, says Zdenka.

Zdenka often made surprise pancakes for children, she shared her life and professional experiences with the SOS mothers in a caring, yet unobtrusive way, and she also involved her neighbors and friends in this undertaking, giving them the chance to find out more about the concept of SOS Children's Villages and the way of life in our SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci. As a result, we made new friends and hopefully paved the way for our children to have an equally happy summer in 2014.

Thank you, auntie Zdenka.
