“Let’s Welcome the Storks”

SOS Children's Village Lekenik and our friends from the Lekenik Municipality and the Lekenik Tourist Board continue the tradition of celebrating the return of storks to Turopolje by organizing an environmental and cultural event named LET’S WELCOME THE STORKS.

Our little writers and artists from the SOS Children's Village Lekenik and the children from the Lekenik Municipality kindergarten gathered to welcome the arrival of spring and the returning storks, while the children’s choir of the cultural society Kolovrat from Lekenik sang in greeting.

This year’s LET’S WELCOME THE STORKS event, which functions partly as an environmental project and partly as a tourist attraction, featured an interesting arts and culture program, culminating in a performance in front of a traditional wooden house in the Zagreb Street.

In front of the Martinić-Bohnne dwelling, the Lekenik children celebrated the arrival of spring with a mix of original works of art, folk customs and traditional songs of the region. Visitors enjoyed the recital performed by the children from the Lekenik Municipality kindergarten and art and literary contributions from the little writers and artists from the SOS Children's Village. Viceroy Josip Jelačić (Almir Bilalić) and Klempaj the Mailman (Stjepan Ćuk), traditionally the masters of ceremony at all events in the Lekenik region, welcomed the returning storks and all the event participants.

“This traditional event that celebrates environmental awareness and cultural heritage is our way of welcoming the arrival of spring and the return of storks to our region. It is also an opportunity to remember folk customs, songs and other tourist attractions in the Lekenik region. Storks herald the end of winter and the re-awakening of nature, and they bring joy to our children, who express their love of spring through imagination, in pictures and words. For all of this reasons, we are always happy to celebrate this day”, said Mr. Mario Čović, the director of SOS Children's Village Lekenik.
