The 5th Bike Tour takes place in Lekenik

This year the traditional Bike Tour in Lekenik, organized by the SOS Children's Village Lekenik, attracted fewer participants than in previous years. A bad weather forecast resulted in less than a hundred cyclists who spent a pleasant Saturday riding along the 10 km dirt road through the Turopolje woods.

Supporting the bike tour with their presence were “Ride it Sisak” and friends from Zagreb, Sisak and the Lekenik region. This year, SOS Bike Tour was sponsored by the Croatian Railway, so cyclists were able to travel from Zagreb to Lekenik by train at a 40% discount, including the transportation of their bikes, in keeping with the rates in the special offer “Bicycles on Trains”. Several participants of the SOS Bike Tour took this option.

For children in SOS Children's Village Lekenik, and for many others, a bicycle is their primary means of transport. It provides them with freedom of movement, helps them in their daily chores or having fun with their friends. Friends of the SOS Children's Village Croatia contributed to this cause in various ways throughout the year, by helping with the bike repairs and maintenance, spare parts or donations going towards increasing the number of bicycles at our children’s disposal. This year, the Village received several second-hand bikes as a donation.

After reaching the Odra river, everybody took a well-deserved break. Children used this opportunity to play and refresh themselves with soft drinks, and when they returned to the SOS Children's Village Lekenik, the lunch was already waiting for them – goulash from a big pot and pigs-in-a-blanket. They rounded the day by competing in various sports. While they were testing their skills at the testing bike range and playing football, the playground rang with children’s laugher and cheers.
Director of the SOS Children's Village Lekenik Mario Čović was clearly delighted with the well-organized Bike Tour: “We are sorry that the attendance was lower this year, but good will is the most important thing and we are already looking forward to the next Bike Tour. We want our friends and donors to spend a day with the children in our care and to remain on our side, supporting us to the best of their ability.“
