Children and young people celebrate the beginning of the new school year

Children and young people from SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci and SOS Youth Facilities in Osijek celebrated the beginning of the new school year by taking a day trip together.

The longstanding tradition of celebrating the new school year, and the transfer of new high school students from SOS Children's Village Ladimirevci to SOS Youth Facilities in Osijek, continued this year as well. The great friends of Children's Village Ladimirevci, Jadransko osiguranje d.d. – the Osijek Office, and their partners Unikom d.o.o. and GPP d.o.o. Osijek, prepared a big surprise for all SOS families in Children's Village and young people from the Youth Facilities. Thanks to them providing transportation from Ladimirevci to Osijek and back, and the tickets for the Osijek Zoo, the early morning of Friday August 29, 2014, began in the flurry of excitement.

The visit to the Zoo lasted for almost two hours. Children spent most of that time with the giraffes, enjoying their impressive appearance. The Zoo Hotel, in the immediate vicinity of the Zoo, delighted all 135 participants by donating lunch. Afterwards, we held a ceremony to mark the transfer of three youngsters from Children's Village to the Youth Facility Osijek 1. After signing the agreements together with their SOS mothers, they received diplomas for successfully completing the Little School for Life, which they attended in Children's Village Ladimirevci for 4 years in order to be fully prepared for the new beginning in a new environment.

During the official part of our day trip, we wished lots of success in the new school year to all students, with special words of encouragement for our youngest students, who are just starting the first grade of elementary school. Five first graders and three new high school students all received gifts to always remind them of this important step in life. At the end of the ceremony, we called out 10 top students from Children's Village and 4 top students from Youth Facilities to hand them special commendations and small gifts of appreciation. In our closing words, we wished all children, SOS mothers, SOS aunts, educators and other adults who make a difference in children’s lives the ability to respond to all challenges we may face in the spirit of togetherness, which we nurture with utmost care, but also to celebrate all our achievements together.

We continued our day by playing together on the grounds of the popular Osijek Kopika, where children had the opportunity to play “flag football” with the players of the American football club Osijek Cannons, and learn more about this particular type of football. Thanks to the sunny and warm weather that followed us through the day, all the games we planned took place according to the schedule. As the buses took the tired children and their SOS mothers home, to Children's Village Ladimirevci, three new high school students, their SOS mothers, Children's Village and Youth Facility child development teams all gathered in Youth Facility Osijek 1 to mark the act of transfer itself. The new students were also welcomed by the youngsters already living in the Youth Facility, who treated them to an assortment of pastries and soft drinks.

Another annual day trip thus came to a close, and thanks to the donations of our friends from Jadransko osiguranje d.o.o. in Osijek, Unikom d.o.o. from Osijek, G.P.P. d.d. from Osijek, Zoo Hotel from Osijek and PSC Osijek d.o.o., all of whom have our heartfelt gratitude, we will remember it and reminisce about it for a long time to come.
