IFCO Conference in Waterford

Representatives of the SOS Children's Village Croatia and a young person from the SOS Children's Village Lekenik’s SOS Youth Facility in Velika Gorica attended the IFCO Conference in Waterford, Ireland, which ran from August 26 to August 29, 2014.

The international volunteer organization IFCO Network is dedicated solely to the promotion and support of foster families around the world. Through its activities, it aims at creating a multicultural platform and developing a global network for the exchange of knowledge and experiences between young people, foster carers, social workers, professors, researchers, volunteers, the media, political and other relevant stakeholders.

The annual IFCO Conference entitled “Ensuring the Rights of the Child, and Family-Centered Services”, took place between August 26 and 29, 2014, in Waterford, the oldest city in Ireland. Thanks to more than 45 interactive lectures and workshops, 10 plenary sessions, diverse social schedule and participants’ exhibition stands, the 4-day conference was a place to study, share and exchange best practices and experiences about foster care and other types of alternative family-based care, as well as children’s rights. The conference ran on two parallel tracks – one dedicated to children and youth, and other to childcare experts and volunteers.

Gordana Daniel, National Program Development Director, Danica Gvojić, director of the SOS Youth Facility Velika Gorica and young person Ana Barišić from the SOS Children's Village Lekenik attended the conference as the representatives of SOS Children's Village Croatia.

During the conference the participants of the plenary sessions and workshops learned valuable information on how different countries participating in the conference provide alternative care for children and youth, with special focus on foster care and measures being taken in the field of deinstitutionalization and children’s rights. In his impressive plenary address, Dr. Geoffrey Shannon, Special Rapporteur on Child Protection, pointed out several times that “A child has the right to be a child”, advocating the right of children to family-based care. Mr. Ricardo Calvo from Spain also gave an interesting presentation, which focused on methods of working with children and their families in the DI process.
