Youth Day Takes Place in Orahovica

At the start of the spring holidays, we traveled to the Red Cross Center in Orahovica to hold this year’s Youth Day. During the 3-day gathering filled with activity, fun and laughter, young people and educators from four Youth Facilities and young people from both SOS Children's Villages took active part in the programme.

Youth Day is our way of letting young people evaluate to what extent the programmes and services of SOS Children's Village help them to grow into self-reliant adults, while the educators are given the opportunity to assess their own work in terms of how supportive they are of letting young people be self-reliant. They are all free to say, in their own words, what the pros or the cons of the process are and to give their own suggestions for future work. Their views and opinions are taken seriously; we see them as an impetus to change and adjust our course while fulfilling our mission.

Of course, getting to know each other better, spending time together, having fun in a variety of workshops, playing board games and sports, learning about important issues such as developing and using one’s creative side, diversity, good manners and dangers of judging other people’s behavior all had their place at this event.

We dedicated a whole day to the topic of Internet Safety, with a detailed introduction by Mr. Darko Rakić. He shared his knowledge and expertise with us, teaching us about rules of behavior on the internet. After the lecture, our young people were invited to create their own messages about this topic. With generous help from Mr. Rakić, our youngsters recorded their messages and made a short video called “Let Our Voice Be Heard”.

We hope that these photos will convey at least some sense of the joyous, wonderful and educational time we shared with these lovely young people.
