When you ask teenagers for their honest opinion, the results are always worth it

Have you ever tried asking young people, i.e., teenagers, what love means to them? What does it mean to be sexy, trendy or smart? The answers are amazing, honest and valuable.

As in previous years, the beginning of spring is always the time to hold our Youth Day in Orahovica. Young people from four Youth Facilities, their educators and young people from both SOS Children's Villages took part in the three-day event full of activities, fun and laughter.

Youth Day is our way of giving young people the opportunity to assess to what extent the programmes and services of SOS Children's Village are helpful in their efforts to become independent adults. At the same time, educators get the chance to assess their own work in terms of how well they support the young people in living an independent life. They can all express in their own words the pros and cons of the process and give suggestions for future improvements. Their opinions and views are taken seriously, inspiring us to make changes and adjustments so that our mission can be realized in full.

The workshops allow our young people to speak out on how they understand life, love and other important aspects of life and at the same time offer them a wide range of important topics through which they can learn about self-esteem, love, relationship between the sexes and relationships in general. Equally important is the chance to get to know each other better, spend time with peers, and have fun while engaging in creative workshops, board games and sport activities.

On the second day, our co-workers Zrinka Vladisavljević, Mihaela Korman and Martina Gajić held a workshop for young people called “Prevention of Sexual Violence”. Afterwards, the young people and our long-time external collaborator Darko Rakić recorded their messages on how they like or don’t like to be treated in romantic relationships, which resulted in a video short called “Likes and Dislikes”.

We hope that the photos from the event will convey at least some of the fun we had with these wonderful young people as we learned and shared experiences with them.
