Start reading in childhood and you’ll be rich forever

Next Friday, April 22, has a special place in the calendar: this is the date when Earth Day is celebrated everywhere around the world. To mark the occasion, Zagreb Zoo decided to combine love of reading with the love for our planet by dedicating the entire Friday afternoon, between hours of 4 PM and 9 PM, to a joint celebration of Book Night and Earth Day.

This lovely story also has a humanitarian aspect, in the form of helping SOS Children's Village Lekenik, which looks after 80 children without parents and adequate parental care. All the participants in this event will be able to donate a book they don’t need any more, i.e., all the books they believe would be more helpful to someone else. All collected and donated books will be delivered to SOS Children's Village Lekenik, where our enthusiastic child readers will welcome them with open arms.
You can donate your book at the event itself on Friday, April 22, between 4 PM and 9 PM, or at any time during this week in our Animal Corner (Vlaška Street 105).

Book Night is an event that celebrates love of books and reading as part of the World Book and Copyright Day that takes place on April 23. Given that the Croatian Book Day is celebrated just one day earlier, on April 22, these two important dates will be combined into a single event to promote books, reading culture, authors and publishing industry as a whole.

Book Night is an event that honours the magic of creation and joy of book reading. The idea is to set at least some time aside to appreciate the importance of books, without closing our eyes to often unappealing reality. The goal of this project is to promote the culture of book reading and respecting books as a shining achievement of civilization and culture through one unifying event, especially in the face of daily trivialization and lack of proper media attention for books. In addition to promoting books, reading culture, translation, publishing, libraries, authors and readers, an event of this sort also ensures building of connections between institutions, organizations, NGOs and interests groups, as well as all book-related companies.
