Daliborka: “I don’t have the words to describe how I feel”

Among many children who grew up in the care of SOS Children's Villages, some stand out for their accomplishments and approach to life, becoming role models for young people around the world. One of them is the pride and joy of SOS Children's Village Croatia, our Daliborka Matanović.

Daliborka is originally from Bosnia. After losing her parents at the age of twelve, she and her younger brother and sister moved to the SOS Children's Village Lekenik. Today, Daliborka is an accomplished young woman and a legal guardian to her siblings.

Her story touched people around the world and international organization SOS Kinderdorf International awarded her with the prestigious Hermann Gmeiner Award in recognition of her hard work, responsibility and conscientious approach to life.

“I don’t have the words to describe how I feel. I am extremely honoured to receive this award, named after a very special person – Hermann Gmeiner. To the children who live in SOS Children's Villages around the world, Hermann Gmeiner is a symbol of inspiration and motivation. It means a lot to me that I won this award. I am also very happy to be a part of such a big community. SOS Children's Village had a profound impact on me. They gave me a safe and secure home where I was able to develop freely. I will always be grateful for that”, said delighted Daliborka, who travelled to Innsbruck to attend the SOS Kinderdorf International General Assembly and the award-giving ceremony. The president of SOS Kinderdorf International Mr. Siddhartha Kaul, personally handed Daliborka the award and congratulated her on her success.

To celebrate Daliborka’s accomplishments, we made a four-minute film about her life. To watch the film, click HERE!
