Young minds discuss European Union in Lekenik

Director of the Centre for EdUcation about EU (CEdU), Vinka Drezga, gave an interesting interactive lecture on the past and present of the European Union in the SOS Social Centre in Lekenik on Thursday, August 18.

The school age children who attended the lecture learned that the project of uniting European countries began immediately after the World War Two, because European people were determined to live in peace and prosperity. And indeed, EU today is a global economic power. Croatia joined this union of twenty-eight countries in 2013.

The topic of the lecture proved to be a popular one and the children took active part in discussions about cultures, traditions and languages within the Union. They also learned the names of all EU member countries and their capitals, as well as the essential facts about the main institutions and policies of the EU, which is headquartered in Brussels. During the lecture, they asked questions freely and they offered their views on the relations within the European Union. They learned how to say certain terms in English and French. The lecturer also spoke to children about some of the basic values – such as the freedom of thought and speech – that the contemporary Europe is built on.
