Every child is entitled to a happy childhood

Please stop your daily routine for a moment to consider this question: is your life lacking in any way? Take a step back and reflect on the fact that every fifth child in Croatia is at risk of poverty and social exclusion.

This fact has compelled us to try and open the eyes of the general public and raise awareness right here where all our children are growing up. For that reason, we launched the campaign called “#vidime/seeme – For the Childhood of Equal Opportunities”: to raise awareness of how poverty affects children and to improve the quality of life for children living in poverty.

Thanks to the work of our SOS Children's Village Mobile Teams in Sisak-Moslavina, Osijek-Baranja and Vukovar-Srijem Counties, we realized that children who live in poverty are not given the same opportunities as their peers. They are stigmatized in school, teachers assume they know less than other children and they often don’t have access to preschool institutions. Our #vidime campaign is designed to impact the visibility of children who live in poverty and to highlight the need to respond to their problems and approach them in the right way (starting with children, teachers, parents and institutions).

The campaign started on 1 October 2018 with a conference “For the Childhood of Equal Opportunities”, which took place in the Little House of Children’s Rights at the Office of the Ombudswoman for Children in Zagreb. Several experts spoke about children living at risk from poverty and social exclusion, among them the Social Work Study Centre’s Marijana Kletečki Radović, Ph.D., who focused on the needs of children living in poverty. Ana Albrecht Čekada, advisor to the Ombudswoman for Children, emphasized the importance of budgeting for children in the protection of children’s rights. The conference was concluded with the presentation by Daniel Rupić from the Social Welfare Centre Zagreb, who talked about the social exclusion from the viewpoint of social welfare centres.

The project is funded by the Ministry of Demographics, Family, Youth and Social Policy and it will feature two other conferences on this subject to be held in Osijek and Hrvatska Kostajnica. We also shot a video you can watch by clicking on #vidime - For the Childhood of Equal Opportunities.
