Lekenik becomes the centre of merriment

SOS mothers, other co-workers, our dear guests and friends all spent the last Saturday in September celebrating the 25th anniversary of the SOS Children's Village Lekenik.

To mark the occasion, the little Turopolje village of Lekenik turned into a centre of merriment and fun. The Hermann Gmeiner Social Centre once again opened its doors to a host of musicians, artists and generous people.

The first guests to arrive in the SOS Children's Village Lekenik early that morning were ushered into the Village grounds by the Lekenik Majorettes. After their impressive performance, the guests headed to the Social Centre, where the Pešćenica Folk Society choir greeted them with a song.

The official programme began with the welcoming address by the host Mario Čović, director of SOS Children's Village Lekenik. Director Čović congratulated all the co-workers, SOS mothers and handymen and handed gifts and flowers to the Association’s National Director and the Director of Finance and Controlling, who have been with us from the first day that SOS Children's Village Lekenik was established 25 years ago.

Ms. Višnja Tuškan-Krupić, the National Director of the Association, thanked him on behalf of everyone involved. Dr. Lea Sokolić, the Association Board treasurer, wished us lots of fun and many successful returns in the future. We also received the best birthday wishes from the Lekenik mayor Ivica Perović and the head of the Sisak-Moslavina County Department of Finance Ms. Blaženka Karakaš.

The musical part of the programme featured our young violinists, led by professor Budak. Our young actors from the Little Fairy Tale Theatre wowed the audience with the recital of their original poems. Short film 25 Years of Carefree Childhood showed the life in SOS Children's Village Lekenik through the eyes of the children.
The official part of the programme was closed by the performance of the pop singer Antonija Šola and an homage to a long-term partnership between INA and Association SOS Children's Village Croatia. Director of the Sisak Oil Refinery Mr. Damir Butković handed Ms. Višnja Tuškan-Krupić the cheque for this year’s donation, to be used for the investment maintenance of SOS houses.

“I am honoured and happy to be able to hand this donation to SOS Children's Village Croatia today, continuing our friendship and cooperation that has gone on for almost a decade. The partnership with the SOS Children's Village is very important to us, because it allows us to support the children and youth without parental care and to improve their daily lives as best we can”, said Mr. Butković.
“The value of our partnership with INA keeps on growing from year to year. We are lucky to have such good friends, who follow us every day and who support us in creating families for children without adequate parental care. We are deeply thankful for their donation this year. It will help us make our SOS houses more comfortable”, said Ms. Višnja Tuškan-Krupić.

After the official programme, everyone sat down to enjoy a delicious lunch made with the produce provided by our partners from the Lidl supermarket chain and Gavrilović.
The celebration then moved outside. Our friends from the Cest is D’Best Festival made sure everyone had the best time. Children enjoyed the magic tricks performed by the illusionists and the performances by singing actors, clowns, street performers. They treated themselves to tasty fritters and had fun with the birthday pinata.
Cewe made sure that all of that fun would be recorded for posterity by enlisting the services of their professional photographer. In addition to taking many pictures to remember this day, the photographer also held a photography workshop for the children. He taught them basics of lighting and perspective and everyone had the chance to create their own photo by using the Cewe instant photo printer.

But that wasn’t the end of it. What would a birthday be without a birthday cake and a large number of delicious cookies donated by Dr. Oetker especially for this occasion? Ledo donated their ice cream, served by their mascot, Ledo the Bear.
The most energetic participants spent their last atoms of strength playing sports. The celebration continued long into the afternoon, making this another Lekenik birthday to remember.
