Carnival extravaganza in the festive, fairy-tale setting of Lekenik

Thanks to SOS mothers, SOS aunts and SOS children going an extra mile in planning this year’s costumes, the Carnival judges were faced with a difficult dilemma when they had to select the best costumes of the evening.

 The Carnival preparations went on for days. SOS mothers and their little helpers sewed the costumes and prepared all the wigs and make-up. What a sight it was when they all assembled in the crowded SOS Hermann Gmeiner Social Centre!

Most of the masks and costumes this year were handmade, so the Carnival judges were faced with a difficult task. Prizes for best team costumes went to the teams of smileys, the sailors, the domino tiles and police and thieves, with latter wowing everyone in the audience. The first three places in the individual costumes category went to Shrek and Fiona, Gandalf and Springtime Lady. A princess and a dinosaur were the deserving winners in the “guest” category, while the director of our hobby art workshop Mirjana Kranželić won in the staff category for her Cleopatra costume.

The famous wizard Gandalf, who ruled the SOS Children's Village during the Carnival season, formally returned the keys to the SOS Children's Village to the National Director of SOS Children's Village Croatia Višnja Tuškan-Krupić. The handover was performed under the keen eye of the SOS Children's Village Lekenik director Mario Čović, who also fronted The Hopeless, a band consisting of co-workers and friends of the SOS Children's Village Lekenik who also happen to be excellent musicians. This year, The Hopeless travelled here straight from the Neverland, bringing the children greetings from Peter Pan and Tinkerbell.

The SOS Children's Village Lekenik children’s band Musical Dreamers made sure to maintain the festive mood throughout the evening.
After a party this impressive, we are really looking forward to the next year’s Carnival. Our kids are already buzzing with new ideas for costumes. We have no doubt that their SOS mothers will be hard at work to turn their dreams into reality when the next Carnival season rolls around.

Speech therapy for all the children in Lekenik and Glina

SOS Children's Village Lekenik will continue to implement a project of speech therapy diagnostics, treatment and counselling for all the children in the Lekenik Municipality and the Township of Glina. So far, as many as 587 children have been included in this project.
