We nurture our relationship with biological parents

We have been providing alternative care for children without adequate parental care for the past 27 years. We recently held a workshop in Lekenik to strengthen our skills and help us continue our successful work.

As we create a loving home and happy childhood for the children in our care, we pay a great deal of attention to capacity building of our child development team, the members of which work in our SOS Villages and SOS Youth Facilities every day. Only if we build our own capacities can we successfully respond to the individual challenges of children and provide them with quality support during hardships such as being separated from their parents, as well as support in developing their abilities, skills and self-confidence.
With this goal in mind, our co-workers – SOS mothers, SOS aunts and SOS Youth Facility educators – all gathered at a 3-day training in SOS Children's Village Lekenik. The topic of training was working with biological parents.

Alternative care provided by the SOS Children's Village Croatia is rooted in positive and innovative practices that put emphasis on active participation of parents, as opposed to past practices that ignored the role of the biological families while labelling parents as “bad”. The care we provide to children starts with accepting and respecting the biological family and parents as key figures in the lives of children and adolescents. Successful cooperation with the parents is also a key prerequisite for coping with separation and building new relationships with SOS parents.

Our mission is creating families for children without care as we help them to create their own future. Education and training that we provide for our co-workers is aimed at developing their abilities and skills so that we can continue to provide quality alternative care to children not only today, but also in the years to come.
