A rainy farewell to our high schoolers and celebration of our top students

Early September is always an exciting time for our new high school students. We traditionally celebrate their departure from the SOS Children's Village with our Corn Festival.

Completing primary school, leaving SOS Children's Village Lekenik, enrolling in high school and moving in the SOS Youth Facility to start a new life in the city – this is always a period full of excitement and new challenges, but it can also make our children quite wistful.

Today was especially emotional for our two new high school students. Today’s Corn Festival was dedicated to them. They arrived with their SOS mothers and listened attentively to the farewell speech by Mario Čović, director of SOS Children's Village Lekenik.

“We’ll always remember all your theatrical and sports accomplishments and treasure all the moments when you made us happy”, said the director in his speech.

In addition to all the advice from their SOS mothers, they also received best wishes in facing new school challenges from all the employees of the SOS Children's Village Lekenik. Everyone expressed their hope that our high schoolers would continue to visit us in the Village, because their SOS mothers and SOS Children's Village Lekenik staff are always there for them.

The second part of today’s event was dedicated to our top students. We had ten of them this year. They were all proud to get up on the stage and receive congratulations and small gifts for their efforts, commitment and accomplishments. We all wished them continued success in the future. Their SOS mothers also received congratulations, because they share some of the credit for their children’s school results.

Despite the rain, the good mood continued after the official portion of the event ended, as children enjoyed eating roast corn, dancing and playing football.

We wish our new high schoolers a successful adjustment and happy life in the SOS Youth Facilities in Zagreb and Velika Gorica. We hope they remain as successful in school and their other pursuits, such as sports. We also wish a happy and successful school year to all our school children. We are just a weekend away from school starting afresh, with all its joys and worries!
